Ryan Lochte gave his best in two finals on Thursday night, which might have been why Michael Phelps beat him in the one they swam together.
Phelps defeated Lochte in a side-by-side duel to win the gold medal in the 200-meter individual medley, adding this to the one he won in Beijing in 2008 and Athens in 2004. He became the first man to win the same race three times at the Games.
It was Phelps’s 20th medal and 16th gold.
Lochte, who won the bronze in the 200 backstroke earlier Thursday, had to settle for the silver.
